In this image, I can see a window. It is black outside the window. The window is split up into 6 little rectangles. It is arranged into a 2x3. When you see through the window you will see a man on the phone. The man is white. He has black hair which is short. He is wearing a light blueish grey hoodie. The hoodie is open a little bit around the neck and chest area. You can see a black tattoo on his chest. The man is wearing white boxers. You could argue it is shorts but I think the end of the boxers are too high up his leg. I think shorts are when they are knee cap level. The man has his left arm behind his back and his right arm infront of him. The right hand is holding an old style, white landline telephone to his right ear. The man is looking at the window smiling while on the phone. There is a white door behind the man that is open. The door is latched onto the red wall. At the top of the wall is a white chunky hoop that joins the wall to the white roof. On the wall, there is 3 paintings. One to the left of the man and two to the right. They have different picture frames. The one to the left has a golden picture frame that sticks out. That frame looks like it is a scrunched up piece of paper that then is unfolded. The two paintings to the right has also got golden picture frames.
The painting to the right of the man but closest to the door looks like it has a picture of a farm or crop field. Underneath the the paintings is a metallic black coloured leather sofa. In front of the sofa is a light blueish grey footrest. On the bottom left rectangle section of the window is a white sofa chair with a dark grey splotches. It looks like the photograph was taken at night. The theme of this picture is Openings. It looks like it was taken in portrait.
Shizuka Yokomizo created this photograph by waiting until it is dark, late at night or early morning. You could say many different things about how Shizuka took the picture. You could say that she got a model and told him to do the pose he is in a room that she created, or she found this room and told the model to do that pose. The man might not even be a model. He might be the owner that invited the photographer to take a photograph. Shizuka might not had permission to take the photograph. I think that the man is and isn't a model. I think he is a model because I don't see anyone standing with one arm behind the back on the phone. Also it looks like he is smiling at the camera. On the other hand, I don't think he is a model because he is dressed in a way that makes you look at home. People sometimes dress in pyjamas or just in their boxers or have a hoodie and boxers or shorts. The props could be placed in there or the walls got repainted or everything was there before, they could of just re position things or it could be from scratch.
The picture makes me feel a lot of things. I feel uncomfortable because the man is in his boxers. It could look like that Shizuka is spying on him. And I feel uncomfortable in the way that the man is staring at you. It looks like the man is lifeless. I also feel suspicious because, again, I think Shizuka is spying on him. To add to the suspicion is that it is taken at night. She could be hiding so no one notice her. She could be using the night as a disguise. Three questions I would like to ask Shizuka Yokomizo are 1. What is your message that you want other people to know from this image? 2. What inspired you to create this image? 3. What is your favourite part of this photograph and what would you change?
After reading an article about Shizuka's work, I have found out some strategies which are smart and interesting. She uses night because it will be easy for her to take the picture into the strangers room and it will be hard for the stranger to look out at the camera. This is because there is the stranger's reflection in the window. I also found out that she asks permission first then she takes photographs of vulnerable people and also people in an intimate state. The theme Opening is pictures that are taken through spaces in objects like doors, tables and windows.
