My relationship to the natural world is good. I travel a lot, most times on my own over South England. The places I travelled on my own to are Brighton, Seaford, Milton Keynes, Colchester, Southend, York, Eastbourne, Dover, Ramsgate, Bedford, Welwyn, Ipswich, High Wycombe and Two Tree Island (Leigh-On-Sea). 14 Journeys in a space of 2 years with 10 within the last 9 months (September 2021 - May 2022). I normally travel to explore and take photos of great cityscapes and landscapes. I also like animals, I have a cat at home and I am also interested in snakes. I went to Two Tree Island to find the only venomous snake in England, the European Adder. You can find it in London along the Regent's Canal. I will be going to Hampstead Heath in London to take some photographs of London's landscape and to try and find the Grass Snake which is very common in London. Hampstead Heath is a great place to find lots of Barred Grass Snakes. People takes photos of nature to capture the natural and man made beauty of the world. This can help them remember a place or to show their friends where they went to or the beauty. My ideal landscape
What Is A Landscape Picture?
A landscape picture is a photograph of landscape like hills, mountains and fields. I expect to see some beauty in landscape pictures like nice hills or mountain range or coastal beauty. When I hear the word landscape I see in my minds eye a beautiful photograph of scenery or coastal scenery. The first 10 words that I associate with landscape are Spectacular, Beautiful, Breath Taking, Coastal, Agriculture Fields, Mountains, Therapeutic, Tranquil, Gorgeous, Exquisite.
Photographs I took of landscape in school
Constructing Landscapes Using Other Landscapes
In some of these photographs I think I did excellent at this task because I made my old landscape blend in to make it look like it was real. I am very very pleased with some of these pictures I created. I chose two photographs that I took from my trip to York with my parents. This was when Storm Eunice hit London, It did not affect York as much but it still caused some flooding of The River Ouse. I took the two pictures and cut parts out. I then went around school and chose some exquisite places that blended in really well. If I had to change something then I might change a different background.
Constructed Seascapes
The picture on the left is a recorded picture. The photographer took the picture and then changed the colours to black and white. The picture on the right is called a constructed seascape. If you construct a picture with some sea then it becomes a constructed seascape. The similarities I see in these two pictures are that they both have sea or ocean. They both have some land incorporated into the pictures.I also notice that these photographs are pallid. They have a lack of colour although the right picture has more colour than the left. They both have some abstract lines and you can see the rough texture on the water which indicates the ripples and waves. Finally, they are both lifeless and as dry as dust. They don't have much happening and the colours are unappealing. There are some differences. The right side looks like it has the edges all burnt with fire. Maybe this is to help it stand out more and are trying to catch your eye. It is definitely one of the first things I seen when I saw it. It also has more colour. It shows the blue sea water and the yellowish white sand and the chalk like rocks. On the left side it reminds me of vintage. It looks like it was taken back in the old days when coloured pictures were not around. You can also see the frothiness of the waves as it crashes into the rocks. In general, there is not much to say about these photographs but if I were to live in one, it would be the vintage, black and white picture. It looks like it has got more action happening than the right.
I did not understand the video at all. It was confusing and also it was quite boring. The art was made by ripping up papers and moving them around to try and see what looks best. The video relates to constructed landscapes because the artist made a picture of different landscapes all into one landscape. The images were from magazines, leaflets and newspaper.
My Response to Dionne Lee
When I was making my response I was confused. But now watching it, I think I did a very good job. The images I selected for my response were pictures I took when I went on holiday to Cambridge. Some of them are also pictures from central London. I hated tearing my beautiful photos. I think I would not change anything about it and I would also not add anything to it. I could improve my response by putting some music on in the background that suits the pictures. The photos above shows the process of the collage.
Uta Barth
Here are 10 facts about Uta Barth. 1. She was born in Berlin, Germany in 1958 2. In 1982 she received a BA award from the University Of California, Davis 3. In 1985 she acquired her MFA award from the University Of California, New York 4. She started off with a mixture of paintings and photos 5. A large part of Uta's work has been the interplay between the environment and photographs 6. She experimented with obstruction and light 7. She lives and works in LA, California 8. Her work has been shown all over the world 9. In 2007, she was given a grant by United States Artist 10. In 2007, she also received a Broad Foundation Fellowship
My response to Uta Barth
The task was to take out of focus pictures of the. school landscape. I found this task frustrating because it is hard to get the camera out of focus but once it is out of focus it is good to do. In my opinion, I don’t like taking out of focus pictures because I think it ruins the good, natural picture of beautiful landscapes, I used the AF/AE lock on my phone to keep the camera out of focus. I dont think there is a way to improve and refine my photographs.
I chose this photo because I think it looks really good. I like how the school building fits in with the nature around it. It is like what Uta Barth did. I have interplayed the environment with the photograph.
Pictus Interruptus - Ray Metzker
Here are 10 facts about Ray Metzker 1. He was born September 10th 1931 2. He Died October 9th 2014 at the age of 83 3. He has won 5 awards 4. He taught at Philadelphia College of Arts for a couple of years 5. He also taught at the University of New Mexico 6. He Married Ruth Thorne-Thomsen who was also a photographer 7. He was a student at the Institute Of Design in Chicago 8. He got taught by Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind
My Response to Ray Metzker
I have created my own pictus interruptus. In my opinion, I think the ones where I used nature or the ones where I used things that were already there was the best ones and are also my favorite ones to take.
More experimentation
I have used photoshop to make these pictures in black and white. I then adjusted the settings like contrast to make each of them unique and different.
His work is a loose collection of thought and observations
He sees it as a reflection of the world we live in
He strives to extract the empathy and beauty within us
His work gives him freedom to live creatively in the moment
He likes to create collages that doesn’t make sense
Abelardo Morell
Abelardo Morell is a photographer who is inspired by Van Gogh. The pictures you can see above are places where Van Gogh went over 100 years ago. He makes a portable camera obscura using a blanket, tent, cameras and a thing that looks like a periscope. He uses the bottom of the tent as the texture layer and the landscape as the actual image. He also revolutionised the ancient camera obscura. Abelardo Morell is interested in art and photography. I have many things in common with Morell, for example, he is an experimentalist. I like to do experiments to make the best possible pictures. He uses nature and natural textures, I love using nature and natural textures. Some of the things I use from nature would be grass, water, trees and landscapes. In my work I will use my photos that I took from out of school as my background, and use textures that I found in school for the layering.
Experiment 1 - Inspired by Morell
In the image above, I used photoshop to get an idea of what it might look like. I took the picture from when I went to York. For the textures I took them from the internet. I think they look quite good and I can definitely work and edit them. I will go and take pictures of my own textures and then use add them to one of my pictures that I think would look the best.
I took these photos inside school so I can use them as my texture to go on top of my picture. I took pictures of natural textures like grass, mud and trees because that is what Morell did. I also took some pictures of textures that I thought could look quite nice and blends with the picture. I think that the tree will look nice because the leaves might go well with the river in my picture. I also think the wooden bench and the stone paving would give a good texture.
Above is the process that I used to make my experiment work. I first chose my picture that I wanted to use
These are the pictures I have made on photoshop. I used my picture that I took in Bedford for the background, the textures I took in school. I first got my picture onto photoshop. Then I clicked new layer. After, I dragged a texture, that I took in school, on top of my picture. I then adjusted the size of the texture to cover my entire photo. Once I done that, I clicked screen which then gives you the texture on your picture. I played with the opacity and fill percentage to make the texture less dominant. I think they look really nice and I am happy with what I got. The best looking ones are the ones that has the grass texture and also the tree texture. I would not add anything to it and I would not change anything. My next step is to choose a picture that I created and develop it further. I could even go into London and take a picture of a London landmark at night.
Experiment 2
For experiment 2, I have decided to get three of my pictures I took out of school and cut some stuff out. I will then go outside and use them to construct new landscapes. On the bottom of the photo will be the landscape that I got from out of school and at the top will be the schools landscape. I have decided to do this because when I did it last time, it turned out really well and I enjoyed it.
In the images above, I am getting my three pictures and I have cut out the sky. I did this by mounting the pictures to a board then I used a scalpel to cut them out again. I did this so the picture doesn’t flap around in the wind. It was quite difficult to cut the board to get no white bits in the photo. I also had to make sure that I don’t cut the image aswell.
How did I make these?, What went well?, What could be better? What was easy? What was hard? If I could add or remove something then what would it be?,
Experiment 3
What am I doing? - Using the night pic of london i took and construct a landscape. Why?
What is the process of making it? Hard? Easy?
What went well? What could be better? Was was easy? What was hard? If I could add/remove something?
Final Piece
Component 1 (Constructed Landscapes) Final Evaluation
The theme of component 1 was constructing landscapes. My first thoughts about constructing landscapes was good because I love to take pictures of landscapes. I prefer natural landscapes since it looks the best and it is the easiest to work with. My thoughts and ideas did not change throughout. I still think it is good. The first artist/photographer I researched was Dionne Lee. She used landscapes and objects to create a collage of a new landscape. She then recorded herself making the collage in a time lapse. I though it was quite confusing and boring as there was no music and nothing that tells you what it is that she is trying to make. By the end, I still thought that it was confusing and boring. Therefore, i have decided to not do any further experiments inspired by her. I discovered Dionne Lee since everyone in the class had to research her and create a response. The next artist/photographer I researched was Uta Barth. She took landscapes and blurred them. In my opinion, I think it looks good because you do not ruin the picture. The landscape is still there and you can still make out what is what. Although it looked good, I decided not to pursue the idea and consequently, I did not experiment any further. I discovered Uta Barth because my class had an option to research different artists. I looked at them all and decided that Uta Barth was the easiest to work with and also her work was better than the others interns of looks. The third artist/photographer I looked at was Ray Metzker. He did Pictus Interruptus. I thought that there was potential in his work. I partially thought that my response inspired by him was good because it depended on the picture. The ones that I had random objects in, I thought was not that good and it destroyed the beauty of the landscape. The ones where I used nature
